More about Heather

Heather (she/her) offers a thoughtful, down-to-earth, and humorous approach to working with her clients. She seeks to create a safe and non-judgmental space for her clients to feel heard and understood. Heather utilizes cognitive-behavioral, motivational, person-centered, and trauma-informed therapy perspectives.
 

She has been working with adults for the past 15 years in a variety of clinical treatment settings focusing on mental health and addiction. Heather has worked with clients on making changes in their lives and coping with anxiety, depression, mood disorders, PTSD, addictive behaviors, life transitions, grief & loss, and relationship issues.
 

Heather seeks to empower her clients to understand themselves better and to utilize self-compassion and mindfulness practices to honor and care for themselves through the ups and downs of life.
 

Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Human Development and Sociology from Boston College along with a Master’s of Social Work specializing in clinical practice and addiction from Monmouth University. Heather is an active learner and regularly seeks teachings and research on life and wellness to practice and share with her clients.
 

Some recent training Heather has attended include- The Frontiers of Trauma Treatment with Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, Self Compassion for Professionals with Dr. Kristin Neff, Ethical Non-Monogamy 101 with Dr. James Fedor, Integrated Harm Reduction Psychotherapy with Dr. Andrew Tatarsky 

 

Heather McCooey is a New Jersey Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor (LCADC), and Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS).

 

In addition to providing therapy, Heather also provides clinical supervision to therapists in the practice who are working towards independent clinical licensure in addiction and mental health treatment.
